Whether you are a seasoned veteran or are just starting out, Real Estate Agents and Brokers are required to maintain a certain level of Continuing education credits to keep their licensing. Continuing education requirements ensure that agents and brokers are capable and informed in their job.
That's why we've created this resource to help keep you up to date with all your Real Estate continuing Education requirements you'll need to keep your license in good standing.
There are different continuing education requirements depending on your experience and you'll need to know the difference so you can make informed decisions on what classes to take.
Know Your States Continuing Education Requirements
Every state has their own requirements you must adhere to. The following information is for all Real Estate professionals in the state of Virginia.
If you happen to be licensed in another state you'll need to check with your state's real estate licensing board to ensure you are keeping up with the expected requirements.
For All Virginia Real Estate Agent Licensees:
Brokers (minimum 3 years), Experienced Salespersons (not broker), and Post licensing (new first 12 month agents) Section 54.1-2105.03 of the Code of Virginia requires all brokers and salespersons (who have renewed their license at least once before) to complete Board-approved Continuing Education to renew or activate their licenses.
For Real Estate Brokers
Real Estate Brokers must complete 24 hours of Continuing Education to renew their licenses. Of these 24 hours, renewing brokers must take:
Continuing Education for Experienced Salespersons
Experienced Salespersons must complete 16 hours of Continuing Education to renew their licenses. Of these 16 hours, renewing experienced salespersons must take:
The remaining 8 hours for both brokers and experienced salespersons may be in Real Estate Related Subjects (electives) or in the required Continuing Education subjects already referenced. These Continuing Education requirements also apply to inactive brokers and experienced salespersons who apply to activate their licenses.
Continuing Education Requirements for New Post-License Real Estate Agents
Post-License Education (PLE) Curriculum Effective as of January 1, 2019: Section 54.1-2105.01 of the Code of Virginia requires all active new salesperson licensees to complete a Board-approved 30-hour post-license education (PLE) curriculum within one year from the last day of the month in which the license was issued in order to remain on active status.
Failure to complete these 30 hours of PLE within the one year will result in automatic placement of your license on inactive status.
Beginning January 1, 2019, the 30-hour PLE program will consist of NINE courses:
